General Education Curriculum/Requirement

The General Education program incorporates a framework of specified proficiencies. Students must complete 24 credits of coursework for ASSOCIATE DEGREES and 40 credits of coursework for BACHELOR DEGREES.  All the general education courses are intended to enrich the lives of each student and prepare them for a life of fulfillment in professional occupations and beyond.  The general education courses are to be taken by every student regardless of declared major.  Also, students will take  3 credits for the  “HIPDET STUDENT SUCCESS COURSE”, this class must be taken within the first semester for every student at the university whether on campus or online.  However, majors with specialization in science, mathematics, engineering, or computer science may have different general education requirements than other students. It is the responsibility of not only the Academic Advisors but the students to understand their programs and requirements needed for graduation.

Minimum Academic Standards

Satisfactory Progress: Degree‑seeking students shall be considered as making satisfactory progress toward their degree so long as they remain in good academic standing and enroll in courses required or allowed in their chosen academic program.  Students having difficulty meeting academic standards are strongly advised to reduce or eliminate part‑time jobs and other extracurricular activities which may detract from their studies, or to reduce the number of hours for which they are enrolled. To make timely progress toward degree students are expected to earn at least 15 credit hours per fall/spring semester.

Good Academic Standing: To be eligible for enrollment without being placed on academic probation, students must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA while attending the university.  If a student’s cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0, then the student will be placed in Academic Probation and have one semester to raise the GPA to either a 2.0 or higher.

A’s are given for achieving 90 – 100% of total points in a class.

B’s are given for achieving 80 – 89% of total points in a class.

C’s are given for achieving 70 – 79% of total points in a class.

D’s are given for achieving 60 – 60% of total points in a class.

F’s are given for achieving anything less than 60% of total points in a class.

The GPA is a calculation of the sum of total quality points earned, divided by the total attempted course credits. Quality points are determined by multiplying the numerical value for each grade earned, times the credit hours for the course. Each student has an institutional GPA reflecting his/her overall academic performance, as well as a term GPA indicating achievement for the current semester. The GPA is used to measure a student’s academic standing. Successful completion of any degree or certificate program requires a minimum of a 2.0 overall as well as institutional GPA. The official HIPDET  GPA is truncated at two decimal places; GPAs are never rounded numbers.

Example:  Student John Doe has finished the Fall 2020 semester with the following grades:

HIP 101 “Student Success Course”   3 credit hours – Student earned a “A” in the course

ENG 101 “English Composition I”   3 credit hours – Student earned a “B” in the course

SOC 131 “Intro to Sociology”           3 credit hours – Student earned a “B” in the course

PHI 131  “Intro to Philosophy”         3 credit hours – Student earned a “A” in the course

Calculation to determine GPA:

HIP 101 ( 3 credit hours x (4) for “A” grade given) =  12 quality points

ENG 101 ( 3 credit hours x (3) for “B” grade given) = 9 quality points

SOC 131 ( 3 credit hours x (3) for “B” grade given) = 9 quality points

PHI 131 ( 3credit hours x (4) for “A” grade given) =  12 quality points

                                                 TOTAL POINTS         42 quality Points

Formula: (Quality Points earned / Hours taken) = GPA

42 quality points earned / 12 credit hours taken = 3.5 GPA

Class Attendance

Students must be registered in a class to attend and participate. Individuals not registered are prohibited from doing so. Research shows that students who regularly attend class are more likely to succeed. The University expects all students to be officially registered before the end of the add/drop period for each course, and to attend all class meetings. HIPDET students are responsible for course work covered during all class periods, specifically any work missed during any absence from class, including the first-class meeting. Each instructor will record absences and deal with them in a manner consistent with departmental policy for that course. Since attendance policies vary among departments and for courses within departments, students must be familiar with the policy printed on the course syllabus.

If a student presents the instructor with an adequate and documented reason for an absence, the instructor normally will give the student an opportunity to make up the work missed, if this is feasible. Adequate reasons involve circumstances beyond the student’s control, such as personal illness, critical illness, or death in the immediate family, or participation in an approved University activity. No absence of any nature will be construed as relieving the student from responsibility for the timely completion of all work assigned by the instructor. Initiating the request to make up class work is the student’s responsibility.

Student Classification

A student’s classification is determined by the number of semester hours earned, as follows:

Freshman                0 – 29 semester hours earned

Sophomore            30 – 59 semester hours earned

 Junior                     60 – 89 semester hours earned

Senior                     90 or more semester hours earned

Proficiency Core Courses

HIPDET PROFICIENCIES  CORE COURSES are skills deemed necessary by the faculty to demonstrate a quality college education. The following general policies apply to the proficiencies:

  • Prerequisite courses, if needed, must be completed before taking the competency course. However, required courses listed can be waived by means of transfer and international students which can prove course equivalency with courses takes from different education institutions. Students should consult their Academic Advisors for additional information regarding a waiver of competency requirements.
  • A minimum grade of “C–” will be required to satisfy course requirement.
  • Proficiencies Core courses may not simultaneously be used to satisfy subject area requirements.

Concentration Emphasis

HIPDET CONCENTRATION EMPHASIS  is referred to as a path to gain more knowledge for greater understanding in this World. While some concentrations simply allow students to dig deeper into an aspect of their larger field of study, others are interdisciplinary, incorporating other disciplines of study as well as the selected major.  The HIPDET concentration emphasis allows students to become a more effective leader in this global economy.

  • Prerequisite courses, if needed, must be completed before taking the competency course.
